“南”字最初是一种乐器。古体“南”字就是这种乐器的象形。上部像悬挂的绳索，下部就是这种乐器的  形象。用于表示“南方”的意思以后，“南”字的本义逐渐消失。
"南"(nán) was originally the name of a musical instrument. The ancient character "南" was the pictograph of this kind of musical instrument. The upper part of the character was like a hanging rope and the lower part was the image of this musical instrument. "南" was later borrowed to indicate the direction of south. Then the original meaning of "南" gradually disappeared.
