The ancient Chinese character "瓜" in the bronze script was the image of a melon growing in the ramification of tendrils.  The outer part of the Chinese pictogram for "瓜" looked like a vine,  and the inner part looked like fruit.  This character represented a melon on the vine.   When people eat melons,  they often cut them along the natural lines,  and thus the Chinese expression "瓜分",  meaning partition.  Later "瓜分" has been used to refer to superpowers getting together to divide the lands of small and economically under- developed countries.
