夜（yè）

 
字形：
“夜”的古体像正面站着的一个“人”，人的左臂下有一点表示这里是“腋”下。右臂下是个“夕”字，“夕”字  在古代就是“月”字，整体表示月亮已经升到人的腋下那么高了，也就是“夜间”到了。“夜”字本义就是指夜晚，即天黑到天亮的一段时间。
The ancient form of "夜" looked like the front view of a standing person, with a dot under the left arm to indicate the oxter. Under the right arm is the character "夕", which meant the moon in ancient times. So "夜" as a whole meant the moon had risen as high as a person’s oxter, or,"夜间" (the night) had come. The basic meaning of "夜" is "night", a period of time between dusk and dawn.
