外（wài）

 
字形：
古体的“外”字左边像躺着的“月”，表示夜晚，右边是“卜”字，因为古代占卜活动多在白天进行，夜晚   占卜则属于例外之事。后引申为“外面”的意思。
The left part of the ancient form of the character "外" was like a lying "月(moon)", and the right part was a character for "divine". In ancient times, divination activities usually took place in the daytime and divining at night was considered extraordinary or exceptional. Later it evolved to mean the exterior or outside.
