言（yán）

 
字形：
甲骨文中的“言”字，底部是一根舌头，舌头之上有一条短横，表示舌头发出的声音。“言”的本义是“说话”，是动词；后来引申为“说出的话”，为名词。现在“言”字不作为一个词单独使用。
In the oracle bone inscription, originally the bottom part of the character “言” was a tongue, and the horizontal stroke above it represented the sound made by the tongue. The original meaning of "言" was to talk. It’s a verb. Later, it referred to the words as a noun. Now it is not used as a single word in sentences.
