(Chìbì)" is an ancient battlefield in modern day Chibi City, Hubei Province. In the time of the Three Kingdoms, the allied forces of Liu Bei and Sun Quan attacked Cao Cao in a very famous war—the war of Chibi which took place at this location. (Zhōuláng)" is the Eastern Wu commander Zhou Yu. During this war, with the help of a strong east wind he was able to burn all of Cao Cao's boats with the army on them. "二乔" refers to two women, Da Qiao, wife of the previous emperor Sun Ce in Eastern Wu, and Xiao Qiao, wife of the current commander Zhou Yu in Eastern Wu. It is said that these two were the daughters of the Minister Qiao Xuan of the late Han Dynasty, and they were two famous and beautiful women of that time. (Tóngquè)" refers to a palace built by Cao Cao, and it was the place where he enjoyed his retirement.
Sunken beneath the sand lies a broken halberd which has not yet been corrupted. I take it from there and wash and polish it before I realized it was a valuable relic from the Battle of Chibi in the earlier dynasty. I can't help thinking if the east wind hadn't helped Zhou Yu, perhaps the beautiful women Da Qiao and Er Qiao would have been locked up in the palace of Tong Que and used for Cao Cao's pleasure in his retirement.
This is a poem which reflects the past. The poet was moved by this site of the ancient war and the things left over from that time, so he sighed for the brave heroes of the Three Kingdoms and their victories and defeats.
