Paper-cut appeals greatly to the Chinese people because of its distinctive features. The subject of the paper-cut is usually based on real life, for example, about historical people, animals, plants, flowers, and folk tales. Patterns of these paper-cuts are simple and clear, yet elegant and expressive with vibrant colors. The meaning of the content is revealed by way of homophony and symbolization. For example, “Prosperity Brought by the Dragon and the Phoenix” symbolizes a happy marriage, “The Persimmon and Ruyi” betokens good luck and happiness, and “Magpie on the Tree” indicates a person or a family will be blessed. All these show people’s expectations for a happy life.
