古文字中，“明”左边是太阳，右边是月亮（ ）。月亮快要落山、太阳刚刚升起，表示天亮了，有明亮之意。在明亮的地方，什么都能看清楚，所以“明”又有清楚的意思，如“明白、说明”。“明”还表示顺序在“今”之后的，如“明年、明天、明晚”。
In its ancient written form, the left side of 明represents the sun while the right side represents the moon （  ）. As the moon dips below the mountains and the sun just deigns to rise, it heralds daybreak, and thus, 明 denotes light (adj.) or bright. Wherever there is brightness, things may be seen clearly. For this reason, 明 also means clear, as in: 明白 (be clear about; understand; plain; clear) and 说明(explain; show). 明 also signifies a sequence in time following after 今 (today; this evening year) such as :明年(next year), 明天(tomorrow) and 明晚 (tomorrow evening).
