Qīngmíng shíjié yǔ fēnfēn,
lùshang xíngrén yù duàn hún.
Jièwèn jiǔjiā héchù yǒu,
mùtóng yáo zhǐ xìnghuā cūn.

Evaluation

The rain drizzles thick and fast on the Mourning Day. As a stranger here, the person on the road looks even gloomy and miserable with sorrow. He asks if there is a tavern nearby where he can have a rest and drink his sorrow away, and a shepherd boy replies by pointing at a distant village nestling amidst apricot blossoms.

The poem builds an atmosphere of dreariness and desolation with the description of the ceaseless drizzle falling down, serving to reveal the melancholy and grief of the passer-by. It ends with a shepherd boy pointing to a distant small village among the apricot flowers, which leaves a great deal for the reader to imagine: in that beautiful village, the tavern's banner flutters among apricot blossoms, waving a warm welcome to the passers-by. The sad traveler hurries up to take shelter from the rain there, and have a few drinks to warm up and dissipate the loneliness and grief.
