Yuè hēi yàn fēi gāo,
月黑雁飞高,
chányú yè dùn táo.
单于夜遁逃。
Yù jiāng qīngqí zhú,
欲将轻骑逐,
dà xuě mǎn gōng dāo.
大雪满弓刀。

Evaluation

“单于”原是古代匈奴最高统治者,在这里代指入侵的敌人的最高统帅。
“单于(chányú)” was the supreme ruler of the ancient Xiongnu; here it refers to the supreme commander of the invading enemy.

没有月亮的漆黑的夜晚,大雁飞得很高,敌军的统帅趁着漆黑、寂静的夜晚悄悄地率军逃跑了。正想带一支骑兵出去追击敌人,顷刻间大雪已经盖满了弓箭和战刀。
On the moonless pitch-black night, the wild gooses are flying high. The enemy commander flees with his army quietly under the cover of the dark. We chase them with our horses lightly burdened, when the heavy snow covers our bows and swords in an instant.

 

这首诗选取了敌人趁夜色掩护逃跑,我军准备追击的这一紧张时刻,生动、形象反映了边塞军旅惊心动魄的战斗生活和艰苦的生活环境。
In the poem, the tense moment was chosen when the army was about to chase the enemies who fled under the darkness’s cover. The breath-taking and tense militant life and tough surviving environment in the border fortress was vividly depicted.
