Deep-seated chairs were generally accompanied with an adjustable sloping backrest or a soft, cushioned mat for comfortable lounging; erotic paintings also demonstrate their compatibility for lovemaking.

The folding lounge chair, which was traditionally called a 'drunken lord’s chair' (zuiwengyi), also was suitable for journeys to the mountains.

Lounge chairs were also commonly made from bamboo, such as this example depicted in a 19th century bamboo furniture workshop in Canton.
