Usage Notes:

在中国过春节时晚辈给长辈拜年,长辈要给一些钱,相传压岁钱可以压住邪祟,晚辈得到压岁钱就可以平平安安度过一年。
In China during Spring Festival, children receive money called “压岁钱” after they wish their elders happy new year. Tradition has it that “压岁钱” money will suppress evil spirits, allowing the younger generation to spend their year in peace and safety.
