Evaluation

The house of my friend is located somewhere sequestered with no neighbors around. A road full of weeds leads to his yard. Birds perch on trees surrounding the pond. A monk lightly knocks at his door under the moonlight. On my way back, I can vaguely distinguish the scenes in the wild field after crossing a bridge. Low clouds are moving slowing in the distance as if rocks on the mountains are moving too. This is just a temporary departure. I will come back soon and fulfill our promise of living in seclusion together.

The poet Jia Dao was once a monk. Li Ning was his friend and a hermit. The whole poem described what the poet saw and thought on his way back after visiting his friend but failed to meet him. The poem depicted the quiet and secluded surrounding of Li’s dwelling place and his peaceful temperament, expressing the poet’s longing for such a hermit life.
