The Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu displays the 14 panda babies born at the center this year. The centerin the capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province was opened in 1987 with just three male and three female pandas. Itnow has 51 male and 63 female giant pandas. The endangered animal is not passionate about courtship, mating or nurturingits babies, which is part of the reason the base was founded to carry out research to solve breeding problems. About 1,600pandas live in the wild, mostly in the mountains of Sichuan, while more than 300 are in captivity.
