Step1: Encounters Level 1: 5 hours of episodic storyline, 5 hours of documentary coverage—20% instructional

Encounters Level 2: 3 hours of episodic vignettes, 3 hours of documentary coverage—60% instructional

“Can-do statements” to begin and end every unit

Step2: Episodic & documentary footage provide a range of “comprehensible input”

Audio podcasts, “unit-rap” recasts, exercises that focus on what is comprehensible through listening & reading

Classroom collaborative activities through which the teacher & the students themselves provide “comprehensible input”

Step 3: Task-based exercises require negotiated interaction

Step 4: Task-completion requires students to move from “input” to “output”

Step 5: A “focus on form” includes attention to grammar and vocabulary,
but only AFTER task-completion exercises have built competency.
