Cam: 大家好. (dajia hao) wo shi Cam.  It’s time for us to look back at the past week and review what we’ve learned.

During this week we learned how to deliver a question in Chinese, both in the positive and the negative form. 她是老师吗?Is she a teacher?  今天你不去公司吗?Won’t you go to the company today? 长城, the Great Wall.烤鸭, Beijing Duck. 京剧, Beijing Opera. All in today’s Chinese Studio.

Yajie: 她是老师吗? Is she a teacher?
Cam: 她是老师吗? (Ta shi laoshi ma?)
Yajie: T-a, first tone, 她, means she. The next word, sh-i, fourth tone, 是, which means is.
Cam: 是, sh-i, is.
Yajie: Next, 老师, which means teacher. 老师 (laoshi).
Cam: 老师 (laoshi), teacher.
Yajie: 她是老师吗? Is she a teacher?
Cam: 她是老师吗? (Ta shi laoshi ma?)

Conversations(1):

Yajie: And nurse in Chinese is 护士 (hushi).
Cam: 护士 (hushi).
Yajie: H-u, fourth tone, 护, and sh-i, 士.. But here士 is in the light tone. So it’s护士 (hushi).
Cam: 护士 (hushi).
Yajie: How do you say, “He or she is a nurse,” Cam?
Cam: 他是护士 (ta shi hushi).

Conversations(2): 
 
Yajie: Now comes the sentences asked in the negative form. 今天你不去公司吗?Won’t you go to the company today?
Cam: 今天你不去公司吗? (jintian ni bu qu gongsi ma?)
Yajie: 今天, today. All in first tone.
Cam: 今天(jintian).
Yajie: 你, ni, the third tone, meaning “you”.
Cam: 你(nǐ).
Yajie: 不, bu, the fourth tone. But when it’s followed by a Chinese character which is pronounced in the fourth tone, then不(bù) is changed into bú, the second tone. For example, it’s不去(bú qù) instead of不去(bù qù).
Cam: Ok. 不去(bú qù).
Yajie: 公司, company. 公, g-o-n-g, the first tone; 司, s-i, also the first tone.
Cam: 公司(gongsi).
Yajie: 今天你不去公司吗?Won’t you go to the company today?
Cam: 今天你不去公司吗? (jintian ni bu qu gongsi ma?)

Conversations(3):

Yajie: There is another Chinese character meaning no. And it’s “没” (mei).
Cam: 没 (mei).
Yajie: 没, m-e-i, the second tone.
Cam: 没, (mei)
Yajie: 你还没去过长城?Haven’t you been to the Great Wall yet?
Cam: 你还没去过长城? (ni hai mei qu guo Changcheng?)
Yajie: 你, you.
Cam: 你(ni), the third tone.
Yajie: 还没, not yet.
Cam: 还没(hai mei).
Yajie: 去过 (qu guo), have been to.
Cam: 去过 (qu guo).  
Yajie: 长城, the Great Wall.
Cam: 长城(Chang cheng).
Yajie: 你还没去过长城?Haven’t you been to the Great Wall yet?
Cam: 你还没去过长城? (ni hai mei qu guo Changcheng?)
