The three rivers of Guangxi Province have existed since ancient times. Guangxi earned its name because it is the geographical point at which three rivers meet. Duliu River flowing down from Guizhou brings the culture of the Dong ethnic minority group to the Guangxi people and is the only autonomous county of Dong people in Guangxi. The Xun River carries the colorful culture of Central China down from Hunan Province to Laobao Town, merges with Duliu River and then runs slowly to the south. It is also, therefore, known as the Rong River, meaning ‘merging river’

Built in 1916, the Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge has a history of almost one hundred years. Also known as Yongji Bridge, it is reputed as one of the four historic bridges of the world, along with the stone arch bridge of Zhaozhou, the suspension bridge of Luding and the Kuznetsova WO steel girder bridge of Romania. It represents the architecture of the Dong ethic group; combining corridors, pavilions, pagoda and attic structures. It is the largest, best-preserved gallery bridge in the world.

The wood and stone bridge has five pagoda-shaped pavilions. With the eaves curling up, they look like stretching wings. Both the pilasters and eaves are engraved with flowers, these really are fabulous. The entire bridge construction has no nails or rivets; it is joined exclusively with a precise wooden tenon system. There are benches for people to take a rest on both sides of the bridge gallery. Looking into the distance from the bridge, you can see a winding green river, tea plants on the slopes and the verdant forests. You may wonder whether you are in a gallery or on a bridge.

In 1965, Poet Guo Moruo visited this site. Impressed by the bridge, he made an inscription of the name of Chengyang Bridge. He also wrote a poem to express his compliments. The inscription and the poem are now engraved on a plaque and stele respectively; they have been placed at the ends of the bridge. A few years ago China Post issued Chengyang Bridge memorial stamps. When Hong Kong returned to the motherland in 1997, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region presented a mini-replica of Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge to the People of Hong Kong as a gift.
