There is a Chinese saying:"Grain Rain Season, Silkworm Time." It means Grain Rain is a season for Silkworm. During the grain rain season, the farmer can continue to raise silkworms because the mulberry trees will flourish during this period, providing many leaves for the silkworms to eat. This is a crucial time for silkworm-feeding. In order to avoid the delayed growth of mulberry trees due to low temperatures and overcast skies, which would fail to guarantee the demanded mulberry leaves for the baby silkworms, the farmers usually feed the baby silkworms in batches so as to help the silkworm farmers out of the trouble.

In this current period, the mulberry leaf pickers are beginning to pick leaves from the mulberry gardens. This is the scene of the expression, “the mulberry leaf picking girls are busy with picking leaves, and the silkworms are beginning to grow fat.”
