Cultural tips

In China, when people make phone calls, their first words would always be "wei", which is "Hello" specifically for phone calls. For example, people usually say "Wei, who is it?" or "who do you want to speak to?" However, in English, there is a great difference between phone language and daily language .Generally speaking, when picking up the phone, westerners will tell you their phone numbers or their office names. Such as: "Hello, this is John speaking." Or "Hello, 52164768, this is Jim."
Also, the interesting thing is when the Chinese people are saying Arabic number "1", they pronounce "yao" instead of "yi". This pronunciation is usually used by the China's armed forces when reporting numerical information. The main purpose is to prevent misunderstanding caused by similar sounding numbers.
