In cases of back pain, fatigue and other symptoms of weakness, many Chinese people opt for fire cupping or 刮痧(guāshā). This is an ancient domestic use for the folk medical technique. It is believed to strengthen blood circulation, reduce swelling pain, facilitate detoxification, and enhance immunity through the extravasation of blood from the peripheral capillaries.
Fire cupping involves placing a heating glass cup flush against the patient’s skin. As the air cools in the cup, a vacuum forms which pulls the skin upwards, stimulating the acupressure effect. A coin or the edge of a spoon is placed against the pre-oiled or watered skin surface, such as the back or chest. This causes the extravasation of blood. The treatment process may be painful, but symptoms can indeed be reduced, and the treatment is also simple and convenient.
