Gulangyu Island(Gǔlàngyǔ 鼓浪屿)

Gulangyu Island is located just southwest of Xiamen City. Visitors can reach it by steamship from Xiamen City in about 5 minutes. The little Island Gulangyu is also known as China's Museum of Architecture. Villas and mansions on the island are ornate and add much charm to the satellite island. In 1902, Gulangyu Island became a concession. Afterwards, Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, Denmark and other six foreign countries all set up consulates and built villas on the island. A large number of elite foreigners and overseas Chinese also built hundreds of delightful buildings on the island. All these exotic buildings have now made the island a mini architectural museum.

The Hakka Earthen Buildings(kèjiā wéiwū 客家围屋)

Any visit to Xiamen must include the Hakka (“Guest People”) earthen castles, which fascinate foreign and Chinese tourists, international architects and artists. In the mountainous areas in the western part of Fujian, there are numbers of earth buildings, either round or square. The architectural structure, carvings, pillar couplets of these dwelling houses reflect the wisdom and creativeness of the Hakkas. The Hakka Tulou (earth buildings) of Fujian is praised as a magnificent architectural work of village houses in the world for its long history, unique style, smart structure and magnificent scale. Fujian Hakka Tulou has fallen under the preparative list declared by China for "Directory of World Heritages". The buildings of Zhengcheng, Chengqi, Yijing and Er'yi are the typical representatives of Fujian Hakka Tulou.
